What is beauty? What an intriguing question…
Well, the dictionary says this:
- A combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, esp. the sight.
- A combination of qualities that pleases the intellect or moral sense.
This is actually a fairly accurate definition. The problem is how the definition is interpreted . Different people interpret things differently, that’s just the way that things work. But what happens is a specific interpretation can be cast upon the masses, leading to the belief that there may be only one interpretation. But, of course, this is not the case, at least in terms of beauty.
What I want to give you is my personal interpretation of beauty that I believe is most fair and real, this may not be the case for you, and I suppose that’s okay. And I want to compare my opinion in contrast with the general mass media image of beauty.
Now the media tends to express beauty as “perfection” and again, their interpretation of what perfection is differs from the opinons of others as well. A common interpretation of beauty is the image of a woman with a relatively thin waist, very exact bone structure, and a lot of fine angles. This likely comes from the realization that things like corners, are easy to notice, and instantly draw the eye’s attention. And this was probably discovered around the invention of mass media. Because, if you can recall, in the past, the beautiful women were “nourished” and had “curves”.
So in a sense, I believe beauty became a term for drawing visual attention. Whereas I believe that beauty lies within, and is projected outward. Beauty does not completely rely on what’s on the surface. I believe that anyone can be beautiful if they simply project it. You have to feel beautiful yourself to really make yourself as beautiful as possible. So it’s not like curvy women are more beautiful than skinny women, or vice-versa. The problem is that the idea that skinny women are more beautiful has been implanted into the masses, so that women who are curvy feel less beautiful. That’s where body acceptance comes in, women need to understand that they are beautiful no matter what. Women are amazing, the things they can do, and the life that they bear, it’s absolutely incredible.
So whoever you are. Whether you’re curvy, skinny, or in-between. You are beautiful, I guarantee it. You just need to let it shine!
So I’ll ask again, what is beauty?
